What ID a locksmith should ask for
Expect a careful locksmith to check that you live there or own the car before opening a door or cutting a key. A photo ID with the address, or the registration for a car, is the usual proof. The FTC tells consumers to expect this check.
What to show
| Job | Usual proof |
|---|---|
| House you own | Photo ID with the address, or ID plus a utility bill, tax notice or mail |
| Apartment or rental | Photo ID plus a lease. Some buildings require the manager to approve. |
| Car | Photo ID plus the registration or title. AAA also says to bring the VIN. |
| Car key or fob | Same as the car. Dealers require proof of ownership before programming a fob, per Kelley Blue Book. |
| Business | ID plus something showing you are authorized: an owner, manager or written permission. |
| Safe | Proof of ownership; estate papers for an inherited safe. |
When the ID is locked inside
Say so when you call. Many locksmiths will open the door and check your ID inside before they leave, or check the registration in the glovebox.
Why it matters
A locksmith who opens any door for anyone is a locksmith who would open yours. Being asked for ID is a good sign. Be more cautious of one who doesn't ask.
Questions people in Omaha ask
My ID has my old address. Is that a problem?
Usually not, if you have something else with the new address: a lease, a utility bill, or mail.
