What the locksmith needs

  • Year, make and model, and whether it is push-to-start.
  • The VIN, from the windshield or registration.
  • Proof you own it: registration or title, and a photo ID. A careful locksmith won't cut a key without it.
  • Any working key, if you have one. Copying a key is cheaper than making one from scratch.

Lost the only key?

That is the expensive case, because the key has to be made from the car's key code and the car has to learn the new chip. It is also the case where a mobile locksmith saves the most, since the alternative is towing to a dealer. Once you have a key, get a spare made. A second key costs a fraction of starting over.
