Frozen car door lock: what to do
Warm the key, not the lock: use your hand or the car's remote, a lock de-icer, or the other doors. Never force the key or pour hot water on the lock. Omaha averages 88 days a winter that freeze at night and thaw by day at Eppley Airfield, which is when locks and seals ice up.

Try this, in order
- Use the fob. The remote unlocks electrically, so a frozen key cylinder may not matter.
- Try every door, including the hatch or trunk.
- Lock de-icer. A small can from any auto parts store. Keep one in your coat or bag, not the car.
- Warm the key in your hand and try gently. Don't force it.
- Door frozen shut, not locked? Push firmly into the door to break the ice on the seal, then pull.
Don't
- Pour hot water on the lock or window. It refreezes and can crack cold glass.
- Force the key. A snapped key in the cylinder is a locksmith job.
- Use an open flame on the key or lock.
